Big & White: Two American Linguists Living & Podcasting in Nepal
If you've ever wondered what it's like to live, work and podcast in Kathmandu, Nepal, this episode is for you! Big & White, their podcasting nicknames, are two American Linguists who, until very recently were living in Nepal and creating a rather hilarious audio account of their daily lives. Their episodes covered much of what expat podcasts cover (https://www.podchaser.com/lists/expat-podcasts-107ZztJV0y) like food, weather, language, and cultural differences but there is an extra kick to their podcast. Their connection and how they bounce off each other is so much fun to listen to. This is the main reason I became a fan of The Big & White Podcast in the first place and definitely why I asked to interview them for the show. Don't worry, we also talk about podcasting bits like technology, social media, podcast learning curve, editing, audience feedback, Nepali podcasts, guests and advice for new Podcasters also. But this conversation is a bit more free flowing than some of the other Geopats Podcasting episodes because we dipped into some of their content topics too like their visual stickoutness in Nepal (thus the name of the podcast), weight lifting and so much more. And since they are Linguists that were doing field work all over Nepal, there is an episode coming on Geopats Language podcast with that geeking out aspect as well. When music from life turns into music for the podcasts with Damon Castillo
This episode is really special for me. Last month for NaPodPoMo I had the extreme pleasure of chatting with Damon Castillo for this episode. Yes, THE Damon Castillo of the Mess of Me album that we've been using for the past 2 years in all of the Geopats Podcast Network shows. We talk about the longevity of the Damon Castillo Band, his geopatness, my favorite song on the Mess of Me Album (Saint Cecilia), his recording studio in San Luis Obispo, what music he listens to and some creative struggles. Talking To The Past To Influence The Future With Aseloka Smith Of The Colored Girl Beautiful Podcast
We are firmly seated in the United States for this episode. Well, I (Steph) am currently in Tirana, Albania (check https://www.instagram.com/stephfuccio/?hl=en on IG or https://twitter.com/stephfuccio on Twitter for more about this) but my guest, Aseloka Smith of the https://coloredgirlbeautiful.com/ (Colored Girl Beautiful podcast), is in the U.S. With Geopats Podcasting we hope to shake up your podcast creation process by listening to how others use the medium around the world and Aseloka will definitely get your creative juices flowing with what and how she has done The Colored Girl Beautiful. Also inspiring is our sponsor for this episode, https://www.podcorn.com/ (Podcorn). They are a marketplace connecting Podcasters to Advertisers. There is more information about their services at 14:23 in this episode but for now I just want to say thanks Podcorn, for the sponsorship. Although Aseloka was touched by the places in Latin America that she lived earlier in her life, it is time her travel to engage with African-American singer, political activist and the Author of the book The Colored Girl Beautiful (TCGB) that inspired the podcast, https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/1093964.E_Azalia_Hackley (E. Azalia Hackley) , that brings her on the show. Actually, I became aware of Aseloka and her podcast when I saw her on the https://www.podcastersroundtable.com/1335-2 (Podcasters Roundtable). She is one of those people that expresses ideas in such a down to earth and insightful way that I knew I had to meet her. You all know that this podcast is my excuse to meet people I admire, right? There is a link in the show notes to that appearance. During this conversation, Aseloka and I dig into the emotional, racial and creative layers woven into her podcast. And there are many. We also tap into the practical side of creating a podcast because the fact that Aseloka did the https://googlecp.prx.org/ (Google Podcast Creators Program), a Master’s degree and worked a full time job while creating season 1 of TCGB is nothing less than amazing and I am pretty sure we can all learn from her. A special shout out needs to go out to https://www.instagram.com/secretadventuresofblackpeople/ (Nicole Hill,) the Producer of TCGB. You’ll know why after listening to this conversation. Accessibly Organizing Podcasts with Podchaser's CEO/Co-Founder Bradley Davis
This episode is a special one for sure. As many of you who have been listening to the podcast, follow me on the socials or participate in #PodRevDay know, I am a huge fan ofhttps://www.podchaser.com/ ( Podchaser), the IMDB of Podcasting. But some folks I talk to outside of the U.S. have expressed concerns about some Podchaser features not working as well in the country that they lived in. So, what else could I do but ask https://www.podchaser.com/creators/bradley-davis-107Zzj5f17 (Bradley Davis), the Co-founder/CEO Podchaser on the show to ask him some globally minded Podchaser questions. Bradley and I cover accessibility and language issues, combined geographic & language search dream functionality, the push and pull of keeping podcasting open and the messiness that organically ensues and so much more. What we intentionally don’t cover are Podchaser or Bradley’s podcasting origin stories. Why? Because they have already been well covered on other podcasts this year (Podlovers Asia, Inspired Money and The New Media Show), so I am instead adding to these episodes in the show notes at https://www.stephfuccio.com/geopatspodcasting (https://www.stephfuccio.com/geopatspodcasting/13)

Shaun from the Germany Experience (https://thegermanyexperience.de/) asked Nicole from the Expat Cast and myself to come on his podcast to discuss how Covid-19 has effected our lives in Germany. The conversation part of this episode is straight from his podcast. Additional parts that I included for you, the Geopats Podcast listeners, are my intro AND a break with other expat projects where expats in Asia have recorded their experiences during the Covid mess. I spent a large portion of my adult life living in Asia and it has a special place in my heart. And man am I kicking myself for not bringing basic chopsticks with me to Germany. The ones in Asian grocery stories here are gold and metal and just too flashy for a simple noodle dish.Sigh.

106: Books: The Sun Also Rises With Two Expats in Shanghai, China: Shannon Martin & Stephanie Fuccio
Years ago an expat friend of mine made a comparison with the Lost Generation in Paris in the 1920’s and Western expats in Asia in the early 2000’s and I have never forgotten it. Shannon Martin returns to the Geopats Podcast for a dive into Ernest Hemingway’s “The Sun Also Rises” book about his slice of the Lost Generation so that we can dig into this expat generation comparison with about 100 years time difference between them. We will be following up with a conversation about Hemingway’s more autobiographical version of “The Sun Also Rises”, “A Moveable Feast” in 2020, when both of us will possibly be living in Western Europe.

104: Mandarin Chinese Language Backstory with David Moser, Author of "A Billion Voices"
Can the making of a language be a riveting story? Yes, yes, and 对啊. According to Sinologist, Linguist, Jazz Pianist & returning Geopats Guest David Moser, for modern day Mandarin Chinese there are power struggles, harsh words, a jazz music studio and a bit of Abbot and Costello behavior that contributed to the language story. In this conversation, David and I chat about his story and people packed book about the manufacturing of modern day Mandarin Chinese via his book "A Billion Voices".

101: Mandarin Chinese Reader ThomReads on IG : Language NaPodPoMo 29
Multilingual reader Thom Clairmont, ThomReads in Instagram, is returning to the Geopats Podcast language show to help us complete NaPodPoMo with a bang. He is almost done with his Masters in Sinology but despite being super busy with his research, he took some time to answer questions about his reading in Mandarin Chinese and other languages. Thanks Thom!

89: Reading, Writing & Future Mandarin Chinese Language Goals with Ryan Shuken (3 of 3) : Language NaPodPoMo 17
Does the phrase "practice make perfect" make you cringe? Me too! When it comes to learning and using Mandarin Chinese, our guest Venture Capitalist Ryan Shuken focuses on fluency. He mentioned this in parts 1 and 2 of this interview but really expands on this concept with real life examples in today's episode. He stresses that he wants to keep talking to people, keep reading the newspaper, and keep typing a message. Perfection is not the goal: communication is. That's not to say that being understood is not important and this is clear in Ryan's future language goals of continuing to build vocabulary to make these communicative moments even more powerful.

In fact, I fully expect that I will swerve towards and away from other languages throughout the month as well. This experimentation is part of National Podcast Posting Month, NaPodPoMo (it's international really but it started nationally in the U.S. many years ago so the name stuck) http://napodpomo.org/ and https://www.facebook.com/groups/napodpomo/. 84: How Many Writing Scripts Are Used in English? Language NaPodPoMo 12
Japanese uses 3 writing scripts but how many does English use? Lisa's 2 recent mini episodes about typing and reading Japanese in these multiple scripts got me thinking really hard about this. Guess how many scripts we use in English? Did I miss any?

80: Emotional & Nuanced Mandarin Chinese Language Moments with Tanya Crossman : Language NaPodPoMo 8
Do emotions transfer over into our other languages? Tanya Crossman returns to the Geopats Podcast to ponder/vent about the difficulties of expressing emotions and nuance in Mandarin Chinese. This episode is a collection of WeChat audio messages we left each other over the course of an evening last week. The total conversation was over an hour in audio length so I have a feeling might be back on the show later in November to keep going on this or another topic related to Mandarin Chinese.

Language in my first language(s) was a struggle for me growing up and I didn't realize how much those struggles transferred over to my second language learning until quite recently. This is my story on how I am taking these unique challenges into account and employing a slow language learning method to keep going with my Mandarin Chinese studies and practice.

75: Time in Mandarin Chinese with Eric Olander, Tanya Crossman & Jeremy Tiang : Language NaPodPoMo 3
Where time meaning is in English versus Mandarin Chinese is very different and complex.By "where" I mean visually and semantically. For example, in English we can see that the "-ed" in "walked" places the time meaning in the past. There are exceptions, of course, but these verb form changes (called verb inflections) are common in English and other languages but do NOT exist at all in Chinese. So how do we indicate time meaning in Mandarin Chinese then? Here are some clips from our Geopats Podcast guests on the language show to answer this question. Tanya, Eric and Jeremy dug into these and other language differences in their full interviews (below) but for today, I want to just focus on time because it is perhaps one of the biggest differences between English and Mandarin Chinese. The guest clips were compiled for a Rode competition I entered earlier this year. Although I did not win, participating in it made me think of doing more audio experimentation with the podcast in the future.
